AUSTIN, TX — The League of Women Voters of Texas is delighted to announce the upcoming annual Making Democracy Work® Dinner, scheduled to take place on April 19th in Dallas, Texas. This esteemed event will be a celebration of civic engagement and a tribute to individuals and organizations dedicated to upholding fundamental rights and liberties, safeguarding democratic principles, and promoting the League’s mission of empowering voters and defending democracy. The Center for Reproductive Rights and the Texas Library Association will be honored for their exceptional contributions, and attorney Molly Duane will deliver the keynote address, sharing her insights on the critical role of advocacy in shaping a just and equitable society.
Honoring Outstanding Advocates
At the heart of the Making Democracy Work® Dinner is the recognition of the remarkable work of the Center for Reproductive Rights, an organization dedicated to defending and advancing reproductive rights as fundamental human rights. Through their legal expertise and unwavering advocacy, they promote policies that protect bodily autonomy, gender equality, and access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. The Center for Reproductive Rights champions the dignity of individuals to make informed decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures. LWVTX President Joyce LeBombard emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, “By honoring the Center for Reproductive Rights, we uphold the principle that every person deserves the right to control their reproductive destiny and live with dignity, respect, and autonomy.”
Additionally, the Texas Library Association will be acknowledged for its steadfast commitment to promoting literacy, education, and intellectual freedom throughout Texas. Through its efforts, the Association provides invaluable resources, support, and advocacy for libraries, librarians, and readers of all ages and backgrounds. LeBombard expressed the League’s deep appreciation for the Texas Library Association’s work, stating, “We honor the Texas Library Association’s work to protect Texans’ right to read, academic freedom, and First Amendment rights in school, public, and academic libraries.”
Keynote Address by Attorney Molly Duane
The Making Democracy Work® Dinner is honored to feature attorney Molly Duane as the keynote speaker. She is currently litigating several cases in Texas on behalf of women denied abortions during severe obstetrical complications seeking clarity regarding the scope of the state’s medical exception to its abortion bans. At the end of last year, she argued the Zurawski v. Texas case before the Texas Supreme Court and represented Kate Cox in seeking court approval to receive a medically necessary abortion. With her extensive legal expertise and dedication to civic engagement, Ms. Duane will share her valuable perspectives on the critical role of active participation in democracy and the profound impact of advocacy in effecting positive change.
