TLA Honored by League of Women Voters of Texas

TLA News | Published on 5/9/2024

On April 19, the League of Women Voters (LWVTX) of Texas hosted its annual Making Democracy Work Dinner to celebrate civic engagement and honor individuals and organizations dedicated to upholding fundamental rights and liberties, safeguarding democratic principles, and promoting the League’s mission of empowering voters and defending democracy.

The Texas Library Association (TLA) was honored to be recognized for its steadfast commitment to promoting literacy, education, and intellectual freedom throughout Texas. Through its efforts, the association provides invaluable resources, support, and advocacy for libraries, librarians, and readers of all ages and backgrounds. LWVTX President Joyce LeBombard expressed the League’s deep appreciation for TLA’s work, stating, “We honor the Texas Library Association’s work to protect Texans’ right to read, academic freedom, and First Amendment rights in school, public, and academic libraries.”

TLA President Elizabeth Howard and Executive Director Shirley Robinson attended the event to accept the award. In her acceptance speech, Howard noted, “Receiving this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and members who tirelessly champion our mission each and every day. It is a reflection of the impact that libraries have in shaping our communities and strengthening the fabric of our democracy. Thank you for this incredible honor.”
