SB 7: What you need to do next! Action News 6.7.21

LWV Texas | Published on 6/7/2021

Defending Democracy and ending discrimination go hand in hand

What an exciting end to the 87th Legislative Session! Thank you so much for being with us every step of the way.

What happens at the Capitol impacts all Texans and influences actions across the United States.  That is why we must keep up the pressure on our lawmakers to fight these anti-voter bills. If the anti-democracy forces prevail, unnecessary barriers to vote will silence specific voices of persons of color, poor and disabled.

Now is NOT the time to rest. We must spread the word all around Texas. We need you to take two actions!
  1. Send an email to your legislators telling them you oppose laws that deliberately deny certain Texans the freedom to cast ballots freely, safely, and equally
  2. After you hit send, a button will appear that will easily send a pre-written letter to the editor of your local newspapers. You may edit the letter or write your own.

I would love to see letters to the editor in local newspapers all across Texas in support of democracy!

If the US Senate will restore the Voting Rights Amendment of 1965 and pass the For the People Act (S1) it will turn the tide on the anti-voter bills being introduced in statehouses around the country. Tell Our Texas Senators to support the For the People Act.

I’m so proud of our members and supporters across Texas who responded to all of the League Action Alerts. I am particularly proud of our League Voting Rights & Election Law team of volunteers headed by Cinde Weatherby. They did a fantastic job during the legislative session analyzing over 400 voting bills, preparing and presenting testimony, developing the action alerts, and working with our voting rights community partners on strategy. They will continue making sure the League’s voice is heard during the promised special session.

I am honored to be doing this work with you!
Grace Chimene, President League of Women Voters of Texas

The City of Amarillo received a petition to recount some of the May 6th ballots in the municipal election. News Channel 10 KFDA invited Sonya Letson, former judge and co-president of the Amarillo League of Women Voters, to explain the process.
